Purpose: Building on the success of the Sisters In Spirit initiative, this project will strengthen the abilities of 5,000 Aboriginal women and girls across Canada to recognize and respond to issues of gender-based violence within their families and communities. It will also strengthen the ability of communities to break the cycle of violence. Activities of the project include: (1) developing and pilot testing a curriculum for elementary and secondary teachers to inform their students about violence; (2) developing and pilot testing a curriculum that informs and educates community stakeholders including Inuit and Métis about violence against Aboriginal women; 3) developing and pilot testing a resource guide for facilitators to use in delivering workshops on violence prevention; and 4) developing a comprehensive five year violence prevention strategy and communications and dissemination plan.
