Purpose: The purpose of the project is to increase the opportunities for women in the Lower St. Lawrence to fully participate in the democratic life of their region and Canada as a whole. To this end, the Table de concertation des groupes de femmes du Bas-Saint-Laurent intends to take advantage of the fall 2009 municipal general elections. First, the project will seek to increase women’s participation in municipal politics and then to promote their continued involvement in various decision-making bodies. The project’s proposed activities will directly affect 482 women through the introduction and consolidation of advisory committees on the status of women in the regional county municipalities (RCMs) where women will get their first taste of municipal politics, propose changes to their municipality and develop an interest in general policy issues, and will be encouraged to run in the next elections. Then, these women will be empowered through the development of health and sustainable development tools. Training will then be provided in the RCMs in order to: 1) improve understanding of municipal structures by these women, 2) prepare them to speak up effectively before decision-making bodies to ensure the representation of a diversity of views, and 3) enable them to develop their leadership skills through learning and on-line training in this area. In the longer term, the project will indirectly affect more than 1,600 women in the Lower St. Lawrence, and many more Francophone women across Canada through a knowledge transfer component that will ensure the project’s continuation and the sharing of the lessons learned with the greatest possible number of players affected by this issue.
