Purpose: The goal of New Realities is to assist women to reduce family violence and/or problematic substance abuse by assisting them to reduce the harm in their lives and take steps towards a healthier lifestyle. Women will be assisted by determining their specific needs and establishing individualized plans to meet those needs and for long term change. A major focus of the project will be on the training of women who have overcome barriers to serve as peer mentors for other women. The project will provide a variety of other responses to the needs of the women including: one-on-one sessions and groups and family counselling. The project is holistic, addressing all levels of need and recognizing the intersecting factors that impact on the lives of the women and their children. The women most affected will be directly involved in the project. An independent evaluator will be hired to assist with the evaluation of the project.
