Recipient Name: Volunteer Action Centre of Thunder Bay Inc. (Volunteer Thunder Bay!)
Location: Thunder Bay, Ontario
Date: 2008-03-03
Value: $28,396.00
Type: Grant
Purpose: This 12 month project will increase the involvement of Aboriginal women in volunteer initiatives throughout the Thunder Bay area. Participants will gain valuable work experience and build their resume by volunteering at a local non-profit organization. Women will have the opportunity to network, feel included in the community and promote intercultural understanding. Ultimately, they will gain the skills and confidence to pursue economic independence. This project will first raise awareness regarding the barriers facing Aboriginal women who wish to volunteer. Volunteer Thunder Bay (VTB) will deliver two Aboriginal Cultural awareness workshops to 45 non-profit agencies. Secondly, VTB will recruit 40 Aboriginal women wishing to volunteer, who will attend five workshops addressing topics such as Leadership Development; Resume Building through Volunteerism and Conflict Resolution. Finally, participants will develop volunteer projects within the community while receiving one-on-one support. The women will complete a volunteer placement related to their career of choice. VTB has the support of the Anishinabek of the Gitchi Gami, a youth-led environmental initiative and will encourage three more key Aboriginal organizations to become Community Partners in the first year of the Spirit Volunteer Corps project.
