Purpose: Through its work providing information and raising awareness among senior women throughout Quebec, Regroupement québécois des Centres d’aide et de lutte contre les agressions à caractère sexuel (RCALACS) has observed that there is a taboo regarding sexual abuse of senior women. To address this, the project entitled Violence sexuelle subie par les aînées : briser le tabou pour mieux supporter les femmes will provide this vulnerable group with information, assistance and support, with the objective of providing services to meet their specific needs. To achieve this, the RCALACS project is developing a training plan that will help to better equip senior women in 15 different regions of Quebec and five Aboriginal communities. In order to optimize the impact of the project and facilitate the transfer of knowledge, some of these women will receive specific training to enable them to help other women. This adapted approach focuses not only on the overall well-being of senior women, but also on restoring their sense of stability and safety at a time in their lives when they are already vulnerable because of their age. With a view toward self-determination, the two groups of women that have been targeted will participate in all stages of the project, either as volunteers, activists, workers or contacts who have received training. At the end of this exercise, evaluation tools will be developed and all project activities will then be compiled and analyzed in order to ensure continuity in terms of the acquired knowledge.
Comments: Multi-year project of 3 years (2008-2010).
