Disclosure of Grant and Contribution Awards

Recipient Name: ABORIGINAL WOMEN'S PROFESSIONAL ASSOCIATION
Location: Edmonton, Alberta
Date: 2007-10-12
Value: $65,000.00
Type: Grant
Purpose: This mentoring project will facilitate the personal and professional development of approximately one hundred urban Aboriginal women. The project, based on mutually supportive relationships among Aboriginal women in Edmonton, will offer six mentoring sessions and 10 skill-building workshops to be held over 18 months. It will also provide information sharing on resources, programs and services on education and employment opportunities. The mentoring will entail loosely structured opportunities for Aboriginal women to connect, share their stories and experience, and reinforce Indigenous ways of knowing and seeing the world. The approach will utilize Indigenous cultural practices, including the wisdom and knowledge of Elders and intergenerational connections within extended family structures through surrogate aunty and grandmother figures. This mentoring project will enable participants to overcome some of the barriers to success they face and to participate more in the economic, social and cultural fabric of Canadian society.
