Recipient Name: IMMIGRANT WOMEN SERVICES OTTAWA (IWSO)
Location: Ottawa, Ontario
Date: 2007-10-12
Value: $61,135.00
Type: Grant
Purpose: In this pilot project, Immigrant Women Services Ottawa (IWSO) will develop approaches and tools to address the needs of 100 refugee women who experienced violence and abuse in armed conflict, and will support them in overcoming these traumas so they can become ready to take labour market training, get a job and sustain themselves and their families. IWSO will provide one-on-one counselling, establish a peer support network with access to resource people, and hold group sessions. It will also refer participants to personal therapists when they need this help to overcome personal challenges. The project includes financial literacy, self-confidence and assertiveness training. The evaluation will document the most effective approaches and supports to help these women integrate. IWSO will share the learning and tools with other immigrant women’s organizations.
