Status of Women Canada
Info Source: Sources of Federal Government and Employee Information provides information about the functions, programs, activities and related information holdings of government institutions subject to the Access to Information Act and the Privacy Act. It provides individuals and employees of the government (current and former) with relevant information to access personal information about themselves held by government institutions subject to the Privacy Act and to exercise their rights under the Privacy Act.

The Access to Information Act and the Privacy Act assign overall responsibility to the President of Treasury Board (as the designated Minister) for the government-wide administration of the legislation.
In 1971, the federal government created the Office of the Coordinator, Status of Women within the Privy Council Office. On April 1, 1976, the Office of the Coordinator, Status of Women was created as a departmental agency under Order-in-Council P.C. 1976-779 and became known as Status of Women Canada. SWC reports to the Minister of Labour and Minister of Status of Women.
The position of Coordinator is a Governor-In-Council appointment and is the Head of the Agency. The Agency is funded by an annual appropriation approved by Parliament.
The mandate of Status of Women Canada is
“to coordinate policy with respect to the status of women and administer related programs” (1976).
Status of Women Canada is a federal government organization that promotes equality for women and their full participation in the economic, social and democratic life of Canada.
Status of Women Canada works to advance equality for women by focusing its efforts in three priority areas:
- increasing women's economic security and prosperity;
- encouraging women's leadership and democratic participation; and
- ending violence against women and girls.
Status of Women Canada is responsible for providing strategic policy advice and gender-based analysis support, administering the Women's Program, and promoting Commemorative Dates relating to women in Canada.
Institutional Functions, Programs and Activities
Leadership, Expertise and Advice
Canada, in line with domestic and international instruments, has committed to advancing gender equality. SWC promotes public understanding about the status of women in Canada and encourages Canadians to engage in efforts to advance equality between women and men. Communications activities form a key aspect of this Program and commemorate important dates such as Women's History Month and the Persons Day.
To further advance gender equality, the government requires federal organizations to take gender considerations into account in legislation, policies and programs. By providing information, tools, training and expert advice, SWC plays a lead role in building the capacity of federal organizations to use Gender-based Analysis Plus (GBA+). GBA+ informs decision-making and increases the likelihood that legislation, policies and programs meet the needs of diverse groups of women and men.
SWC also provides strategic policy analysis and advice and acts as a knowledge broker to support federal organizations and other stakeholders in advancing equality for women and girls. In addition, SWC explores gaps and emerging issues that continue to affect the status of women and girls in Canada.
This is mainly done in collaboration with other federal organizations, provinces, territories and civil society.

Description: Contains information on federal, provincial and territorial government departments, agencies, boards, commissions, corporations and councils, including correspondence related to their mandates, structures, priorities, etc., that is corporate or general in nature and not issue-specific.

Gender Equality / Women’s Issues

Sisters in Spirit (SIS)
Description: Contains information about the Native Women’s Association of Canada’s (NWAC) on SIS initiative. NWAC’s work with other Aboriginal organizations and the federal government on activities aimed at quantifying the actual number of missing and murdered women, understanding the root causes of racialized and sexualized violence.

Family Violence Initiative
Description: The Family Violence Initiative is a long-term federal commitment to a long-term societal problem with many social, justice, and health dimensions. The objectives are: to increase public awareness and understanding of family violence, strengthen the criminal justice legal framework, provide prevention, protection and treatment services to Aboriginal and Inuit communities, emergency shelters and long-term housing, enhance national information; exchange and coordination.

- Researchers' Database
Description: This electronic database includes the names of individuals, organizations that they work for, complete addresses, telephone numbers, facsimile numbers, e-mail addresses, education and work experience, organization's mandate or research experience, languages spoken, read and written, publications and areas of policy research interest.
Class of Individuals: Private citizens and individuals working for organizations who have expressed an interest in doing policy research.
Purpose: To create a researchers list or inventory by areas of expertise.
Consistent Uses: To be used to send calls for proposals to conduct policy research as well as to send other information related to the Policy Research Fund. With the permission of the individual or organization, the information may also be shared with other research organizations.
Retention and Disposal Standards: The information is retained until the individual officially requests to be removed from the inventory or until such time as the information is no longer deliverable (returned mail).

Advancing Equality for Women
Through this Program, SWC supports action and innovation by investing in initiatives that work to bring about equality between women and men. The Program provides grant and contribution funding to organizations to support community-based action that will lead to equality in communities across Canada. Funded projects occur at the national, regional, and local levels and work to help create conditions for success for women in Canada.
Projects address the economic and social situation of women and their participation in democratic life. They are diverse in nature and scope and apply a variety of approaches and strategies to address the complexity of the issues affecting women. Specifically, the Program invests in projects that incorporate gender considerations, and increase and strengthen access to a range of opportunities, supports, information, resources and services, tools, etc. Projects work with stakeholders such as: women's and community organizations, public institutions and the private sector.
The Program also facilitates collaboration, networking and partnerships that promote equality and the advancement of women in Canada. SWC facilitates networking; develops partnerships where needed to address horizontal issues impacting women and girls; shares knowledge; and assists organizations working to advance women's equality to gain access to expertise, resources, and tools.

Description: Contains information relating to the provision of financial assistance, through grants and contributions, to organizations working to improve the status of women in Canada.

Internal Services are groups of related activities and resources that are administered to support the needs of programs and other corporate obligations of an organization. Classes of Personal Information
In the course of conducting its activities, Status of Women Canada accumulates categories of personal information which are stored as part of the general subject files where records are not normally retrieved by name of individual or any other personal identifier. The Department handles policy and program issues but not personal program delivery matters. This form of personal information is normally retrievable only if specifics are provided concerning the issue of complaint, and the date and name of the complainant. All issues dealing with federal government legislation, policies and programs that impact on women are included. The retention periods for these classes of personal information are controlled by the record schedules of the general subject files in which they are stored.
