Supplier Diversity

Many women and under-represented populations’ owned businesses in Canada have had difficulty gaining access to the supply chains of leading Canadian businesses and government organizations. A case study by the Canadian Conference Board indicates that supplier diversity has existed in the United States since the 1960’s and has had a positive impact on business growth through, greater employee satisfaction and greater market penetration, and is generally mutually beneficial for both suppliers and corporations. The study indicated that supplier diversity is an untapped resource in Canada for which to grow the Canadian economy. Business certification plays an important role in connecting smaller diverse suppliers with larger businesses, giving suppliers credibility and allowing them to be more easily identified. Business accreditors facilitate supplier diversity by identifying and connecting qualified diverse suppliers for corporations. This way, diverse suppliers have opportunities to be considered on a level playing field with established suppliers when companies seek the most qualified suppliers.
