Improving Access to Second-Stage Services for Women who have Experienced Abuse

Women in meeting

In Montréal and neighbouring Laval, Shield of Athena Family Services completed a project for immigrant women leaving emergency shelters. The results of the two-year project included improved intervention, support and integration services for women transitioning to violence-free lives. A group of liaison workers from various local cultural communities provided the women with legal assistance as well as social and other vital supports. Workshops on financial literacy and other skills also helped participants prepare to live independently.

“As an immigrant woman, it seemed others were always making my decisions for me. Shield of Athena workers showed me how to use public transport, open my own bank account, take a computer course and even buy groceries - all for the first time!”
