Purpose: This 36-month national pilot initiative will assist unemployed women who are living in poverty to enter and remain in the labour market through self-employment initiatives. The project will provide women will the skills and abilities to start and grow a viable enterprise in their communities. The organization will partner with key women-led organizations in four sites across Canada to deliver the project. This project will also disseminate its results through sharing, approaches and best practices with other organizations. In addition to assisting women in reaching their economic security goals, the Women’s Economic Council intends to use this project as a way to increase stakeholders’ awareness and support of community economic development as a realistic and viable economic option for women in Canada.
